The following table is a general guide to the proper uses, although this may vary from wood species to species.

Grit	Uses
80-120	Smoothing of the surface, removing smaller imperfections and marks (wood works). Heavy sanding and stripping, roughing up the surface. Rough Sanding to get the surface down quickly.
150-180	Final sanding pass before finishing the wood. Drywall Sanding.
220-240	Sanding between coats of stain or sealer. Wood and cabinet work. Most general sanding in home for paint, touch up, ect.
400	Removing dust spots or marks between finish coats. Any wet sanding of primer on automobiles. Fine sanding of the finish to remove some luster or surface blemishes and scratches (Staining wood solution, car body work).
600	Finish Sanding on Paint Finishes. Touch up.
1000	Often used on boats, jell coats work on hulls.
1500-2000	Wet sanding all smooth sanding on clear coats and expensive finishing and polishing out.
